What is a drillable Gantt chart?

The one chart that serves the boardroom and the delivery stand-up — without maintaining two versions that drift apart.

22 August 2026 · 5 min read

A drillable Gantt chart is a Gantt chart where each phase can collapse into a single summary bar or expand to reveal the tasks underneath it — toggled live, in one click. Collapsed, it's a clean five-phase overview for executives. Expanded, it's the full task-level plan for the delivery team. Same chart, same source of truth, two audiences.

It exists to kill a specific, familiar pain: the two-deck problem.

The problem it solves

Executives want the shape of the program — five or six phases, key milestones, what's at risk. The delivery team wants every task, owner and dependency. So most project managers maintain two artifacts: a tidy exec slide and a detailed plan. They immediately start to drift, and by the third status cycle they disagree with each other. A drillable Gantt collapses both into one chart, so there's nothing to keep in sync.

How it works

Group your tasks into phases. Each phase gets a ▶ / ▼ toggle:

In the meeting
Open with five collapsed phases. When the CFO asks which task is slipping in Phase 3, click to drill — the chart expands in place. No “let me pull up the other deck”, no backup slides. Press to collapse and move on.

Why static tools can't do this

A Gantt built in PowerPoint or Excel is a picture: there's no live collapse, so you're back to maintaining two versions. Drilling requires the chart to compute the summary from its children on the fly — which is exactly what GANTT360° was built to do, and the feature no other browser Gantt tool offers.

One chart serves both the steering committee and the delivery team. No second version to keep in sync.

The GANTT360° philosophy

If you present the same plan to two audiences, this is the feature that saves you the most time between meetings. See it in the steering-committee workflow, or try it free on your own plan.

Frequently asked

What is a drillable Gantt chart?
A drillable Gantt chart is one where each phase can collapse to a single summary bar (for an executive overview) or expand to show its underlying tasks (for the delivery team), toggled live. It lets a single chart serve both audiences instead of maintaining a separate exec slide and detailed plan.
How does a Gantt summary bar calculate its dates and progress?
When a phase is collapsed, its summary bar's start is the earliest start among its child tasks, its end is the latest child end, and its progress is the duration-weighted average of the children. In GANTT360° this recalculates automatically, so the summary is always in sync with the detail beneath it.
Can one Gantt chart serve both executives and the delivery team?
Yes — with drillable phases. Executives see the collapsed five-phase overview; the delivery team expands into every sub-task. Because both views come from the same chart, they never drift apart the way a separate exec slide and detailed plan do.
Can PowerPoint or Excel make a drillable Gantt chart?
No. A Gantt built in PowerPoint or Excel is static — there's no live collapse or auto-calculated summary bar, so you end up maintaining two versions. Drilling requires the tool to compute the summary from child tasks on the fly, which is what a purpose-built tool like GANTT360° does.
Is there a free drillable Gantt chart tool?
Yes. GANTT360° offers drillable phases, runs in the browser on any OS, and has a free plan — no plugin required. You can collapse and expand phases live and export the result to editable PowerPoint.
